Tyrannosaurus was a Late Cretaceous theropod, and one of the most recognizable dinosaurs today. It was a formidable dinosaur without any natural predators or direct competition in its environment.

Tyrannosaurus Size

Tyrannosaurus was a large carnivore of the late Cretaceous. It's average length was around 46 feet, the largest specimen attained to a length of 48 feet. It was long believed to be the largest carnivorous dinosaur, but it has in recent years been eclipsed by the new species Charcarodontosaurus, Giganotosaurus and based on new findings; Mapusaurus.

Anatomy of Tyrannosaurus

Tyrannosaurus had the largest brain compared to it's body size of any large theropod. This enabled it to be a effective hunter. Surprisingly, 65% of that made it's olfactory bulb, in other words, 65% of that made up the organ that enables smelling! This indicates that it was a excellent smeller, picking up scents from miles away. It's jaws were very powerful. Its teeth were long, thick and banana shaped. This suggests that it had strong, crushing jaws, suited for crushing of bones. Tests have shown that it had a bite force of 7000 pounds, enough to crush bones.

Environment

Tyrannosaurus lived 68-65 million years ago, in the Northern U.S. and Southern Canada. This means a fairly open, dry, scrubland-like, and somewhat forested environment, where the Tyrannosaurus would have competed for food with predators like Nanotyrannus. Tyrannosaurus would have hunted herbivores like Triceratops, Edmontosaurus, Anatotitan, Ankylosaurus, Euplocephalus, and Pachephalosaurus.
